Slippery Rock University turns 129 years old today.

March 26, 1889 was the first day of classes at what was then Slippery Rock State Normal School and it is celebrated as Founders’ Day ever since. During that first term, there were 168 students enrolled, and two-thirds of the students were from Butler County.

Tuition was $14 per term and $32 if you needed room and board.

The school was renamed Slippery Rock State Teachers College in the late 1920s; renamed again to Slippery Rock State College in 1960, and finally became Slippery Rock University in 1983. Enrollment now exceeds 8,300 students.

We, the alumni, current students, current and former faculty and staff members, from all corners of the World, the citizens of the town, wish a happy birthday to our beloved University!

May our alma mater continue enlightening the journey we embarked on when we crossed her doorsteps in our never ending pursuit of knowledge and self-betterment.
