3:30 p.m. April 13 — A Slippery Rock University student was arrested after she allegedly shoved and elbowed a police officer trying to arrest her during an incident at a student apartment complex.

The incident began with an apparent disagreement between roommates, according to court documents. Police went to the apartment and found two students, including Essence L. Cooper, 19, of Uniontown, Fayette County, who refused to provide an officer with her identification, according to court documents.

The officer moved in to arrest Cooper, police said, and she “yanked her arm away” as police tried to place her in handcuffs; she eventually “shoved” and “elbowed” the officer, documents said.

Police subsequently handcuffed Cooper and took her to the station. After consulting with an assistant district attorney, police charged her with resisting arrest, simple assault and disorderly conduct.

District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned Cooper on the charges. She was placed in the Butler County Prison on $5,000 bail following arraignment.
