Man Sentenced In Several Retail Theft Cases

A jail sentence was handed down in Butler County Court Thursday to a man charged in several theft cases.

Michael John Wallace Scott, 29, was sentenced to 1 year minus 1 day to 2 years minus 2 days in Butler County Prison by Judge William Shaffer.

His parole will be followed by four years of probation, and he also was ordered to pay court costs and $529.60 in restitution.

Scott pleaded guilty Jan. 16 to felony burglary, one count of misdemeanor retail theft and two summary retail theft counts.

He was initially charged in five cases with felony burglary, theft and misdemeanor criminal mischief after an incident Jan. 11, 2017; misdemeanor retail theft and possession of a controlled substance after an incident Feb. 8, 2017; misdemeanor retail theft in an incident May 15; misdemeanor retail theft in an incident Aug. 9; and felony robbery, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and summary retail theft in an incident Sept. 2.

The remaining charges were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

The January incident occurred in Slippery Rock, where state police said Scott stole several items, including a record player, Samurai sword, guitar, video game system, air conditioner units and a muzzleloader rifle, among other items, from a home in the 300 block of Ralston Road.

He pleaded guilty to felony burglary in that case,

Butler police filed charges in the February incident after Scott stole merchandise valued at $304.43 at the Pullman Square Kmart store, and when arrested, was found with six Suboxone strips for which he did not have a prescription.

He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor retail theft in that case.

Butler Township police then filed charges in the May incident after Scott stole a cell phone and other merchandise valued at a combined $167.88 at the Wal-Mart at Butler Commons.

He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor retail theft in that case.

In the August incident, Scott was charged by Butler police after shoplifting merchandise from a local store valued at $53.71.

The misdemeanor retail theft charge in that case was changed to a summary, to which he pleaded.

He was also charged with felony robbery and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia after an incident at Friedman’s supermarket on West Brady Street Sept. 2.

City police said Scott attempted to steal a pack of doughnuts and a jug of milk, and struggled with an employee. The employee and a good Samaritan were able to hold Scott until police arrived.

When he was arrested, police said he was also found in possession of an empty stamp bag of suspected heroin, a used syringe and a spoon that appeared to have drug residue on it.

The summary retail theft to which he pleaded in that case was later added.
